Cómo obtener la Ciudadanía y convertirse en ciudadano americano.
El primer paso para convertirse en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos es solicitar y ser un residente permanente legal. Usted debe ser un residente permanente legal por lo menos por cinco años si no está casado con un cónyuge ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. Si está casado con un cónyuge ciudadano de los Estados Unidos, puede solicitar la naturalización y la ciudadanía en tres años. Una vez que haya cumplido con este plazo, se le permitirá proceder con el proceso de naturalización mediante la presentación de la N-400 y los documentos de apoyo.
Requisitos de elegibilidad para la naturalización:
Tener 18 años de edad o más
Ser titular de la tarjeta de residencia (Green card) por lo menos durante 5 años al presentar su solicitud N-400
Tener residencia continua en los Estados Unidos durante al menos 5 años en el momento de presentar la solicitud.
Estar físicamente presente en los Estados Unidos durante al menos 30 meses de los 5 años anteriores a la presentación de la solicitud.
Ser una persona de buen carácter moral y leal a los Estados Unidos
Ser capaz de leer, escribir y hablar inglés
Tener un conocimiento básico y una comprensión de la historia y el gobierno de los EE.UU.
Aprobar un examen de historia/gobierno
Si el solicitante tiene más de 55 años de edad y ha vivido en los Estados Unidos durante 15 años o ha sido residente por al menos 20 años y tiene más de 50 años de edad, él o ella puede tomar el examen de naturalización en su idioma nativo. Hay algunas personas que podrían ser capaces de convertirse en ciudadanos estadounidenses si uno de sus padres es o fue ciudadano estadounidense bajo la Ley de Ciudadanía Infantil o como Ciudadano Derivado, incluso si la persona nació en otro país.
